Valerie Schmidt, 61


Valerie Schmidt, age 61, died at home on Thursday, April 18, 2013. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Thursday, April 25th at the All Saintís Chapel in the Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

Valerie Zoe Schmidt the daughter of Grant and Clara May (Stevens) Schmidt was born July 25, 1951 in Heron Lake, Minnesota. She grew up on farms near Brewster, Fulda, Evansville and Kensington, Minnesota. She attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Alexandria. She attended various schools, including a Seventh Day Adventist School in the Twin Cities. She graduated from the Kensington High School in 1969. After school, Valerie went on to further her education at Alexandria Technical College and graduated with a degree of legal secretary.

When her father passed away, Valerie took over the family farm in Kensington. Later she had a dairy farm near Lowry and most recently she had moved into Lowry where she continued to reside until the time of her death. She passed away at home on April 18, 2013. Valerie was employed at several local newspapers including the Hoffman Tribune and the Pope County Tribune. She had served on the Hoffman and Kensington school boards, and helped with the Kensington Little Miss Runestone Pageant. Valerie was very active with the Pope County Humane Society, serving on the board and office manager. She enjoyed sewing and embroidering. She will be remembered for her great faith in the Lord, her silly humor, her love to laugh, and her love of cats.

Valerie is survived by her three cats: Sylvester, Silvia and Treasure; her special friends, Doris Wersinger, Carroll Anderson, and Crystal Erlandson, whom she considered and protected like a daughter; many other friends and cousins.
