Matthew C. Chan, 23, of Glenwood, died unexpectedly of natural causes on Monday, June 6, 2011, at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 10, at Glenwood Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Randy Chrissis officiating. Interment was in Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements were with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Matthew Christian Chan, the son of Kenneth R. and Elizabeth A. (Bullock) Chan, was born on Sept. 22, 1987, at Glenwood. He was baptized and confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church and attended Minnewaska schools, graduating in 2006. While in high school he played basketball and was a member of the golf team. Following graduation, Matt attended Alexandria Technical College where he received a degree in machine tool technology. He had been employed for four years at Massman Automation in Villard and made his home in Glenwood with his two four-legged friends, Britty and Duke.
Matt, a third-generation volunteer fireman, was a two-year member of the Glenwood Fire Department. He was also a member of Pheasants Forever and Gobblers of Glacial Ridge. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and golfing. He enjoyed auto racing of any kind and hanging out with family and friends. Matt will be remembered for his smiling, friendly face, his enthusiasm and pleasant disposition.
Matt is survived by his parents, Ken and Beth Chan of Glenwood; his brother and sister-in-law, Joshua and Jennifer Chan and their son, Kolton, all of Ironton; his grandmother, Lorraine Chan of Lowry; his grandfather, Charles Bullock of Glenwood; two aunts, Debbie Chan of Lowry and Bonita (Rick) Carlson of Center City; three uncles, Donald (Barb) Chan of Alexandria, Rob (Mary) Bullock of Sartell and Craig (Pam) Bullock of Greeneville, Tenn.; as well as many cousins and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Robert "Bob" Chan and grandmother, Marie Bullock.
The organist for the service was Diane DeJong and Jeffrey Iverson was the soloist. Active casket bearers were the Glenwood Fire Department and honorary casket bearers were all Matt's precious friends and family.

Representatives from more than 15 area fire departments gathered Friday for the funeral of Matt Chan, a 23-year-old Glenwood resident and firefighter who died suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, June 6 at the Glenwood Fire Hall.
