Glenn C. Hoplin, 91, of Glenwood, died Thursday, June 21, 2012, at Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood.
Funeral services were held today, Monday, June 25, at St. Paulís Lutheran Church in Lowry with the Rev. John Lee officiating. Interment was in Reno Mission Cemetery, Lowry. Arrangements were with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Glenn Carlton Hoplin was born on Aug. 24, 1920, in Lowry, the third child of Ole and Esther (Nelson) Hoplin. He attended Lowry Elementary School and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1938. He attended St. Cloud Teachers College for one year and graduated from Augsburg College in Minneapolis in June of 1942. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as an electricianís mate aboard the Battleship USS New Jersey (BB62) in the Pacific Theater until the end of WWII. He married Ruth Evelyn Pearson on June 4, 1945, and was honorably discharged from military service in October 1945 in Minneapolis. After the war, he returned to Lowry with his wife and was employed by Hoplin & Nelson Hardware. To this union was born a son, David, in 1947 and a daughter, Beth, in 1953. Ruth died in 1976. In 1980, Glenn married Dorothy (Dynda) Wagner at which time they moved to Glenwood.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son, David (Carol) of Mendota Heights; daughter, Beth (Lynn Estes) of Eagan; brother, Donald (Doris Robieson) of Glenwood; sisters, Elise (James Anderson) of Minneapolis and Miriam (Lynn Lundin) of Pelican Rapids; four grandchildren, Matthew (Jane) Hoplin, Sarah (Genaro) Vasquez, David Estes and Jon Estes; three great-grandchildren, Anna, Daniel and Emily Hoplin; six step-children, Merle (Bonnie) Wagner, Bruce (Terri) Wagner, Gordon (Ann) Wagner, Eileen (Butch) Holtberg, Suzanne Schurr and Kevin Wagner; seven step-grandchildren, Troy Wagner, Molly (Mark) Skaar, Matthew (Andrea) Wagner, Nicole (Mark) Meyer, Jamie (Clay) Lipke, Joelle (Shannon) Gwost and Kinsey Schurr; 12 step-great grandchildren, Jasmine and Sabrina Vasquez, Leah and Andrew Skaar, Michael, Megan and Madelyn Wagner, Jackson, Isaac and Carter Meyer, Becker Lipke and Kennedy Gwost.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Ruth; brothers, Oliver and Paul; sister, Ruth Huettl; beloved uncle, David Nelson; and nephew, Daniel Anderson.
Casketbearers for the service were Merle, Bruce, Gordon and Kevin Wagner, Matthew Hoplin and David and Jonathan Estes. Ann Foley served as organist and Sarah Vasquez played the prelude and accompanied the soloist, Judy Johnson, on piano.
