Andrew Peter Engebretson, 78
Andrew Peter Engebretson, 78, Balsam Lake, Wis., passed away suddenly on February 1, 2011, at the St. Croix Regional Medical Center in St. Croix Falls, Wis.
Andy was born on August 21, 1932, in Starbuck to parents Herman and Agnes Engebretson. He was the oldest of three children. He attended primary school in Lowry and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1950. He earned his bachelor's degree in history and economics from St. Olaf College in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Law in 1959 and began his legal career in Alexandria, Minnesota. In 1962 he moved his practice to St. Paul, where he ran his own law firm in the McColl Building from 1969 - 1996. He maintained offices in St. Paul and Duluth through 2007. After a five-month battle with heart and lung failure, he returned to his home on Balsam Lake in September 2010.
Andy was a man of many interests. He enjoyed games like chess, cribbage and Scrabble. He proudly belonged to the Scottish Rite, the Osman Shrine and the American Legion Post in Lowry. He read deeply and widely. He loved to tell anyone who would listen all about Lowry, St. Olaf, the Army, Alexandria and his law practice in St. Paul. Andy was fiercely proud of his Norwegian heritage; he spoke and read Norwegian fluently. Andy loved his wife Rachel and his family. He loved Balsam Lake. He loved animals, especially his dog Jack and his cat DJ.
Andy loved the practice of law. Andy had hundreds of clients and seemed to remember each one. His work with Ernie Steneroden on University Avenue left Andy with many "OCO's" - Old Clients of the Office - for whom the telephone line and the office door were always open. Andy ran his own law firm in the McColl Building for nearly 30 years. He later maintained offices in St. Paul and Duluth. To his last days, and despite his decreased mobility, Andy dreamed of starting another law practice.
Andy leaves to celebrate his memory, wife of 40 years, Rachel Engebretson; brother, Paul; sister, Martha; daughters, Sarah and Margaret; son, Peder; stepsons, Dale, Mark and Danny; stepdaughter, Carmel; along with nieces, nephews and their children.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepdaughter, Rebecca Richardson.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Balsam Lake, Wis., with Pastor Diane Norstad officiating and Dorene Hendrickson providing the music.
Andy will be laid to rest at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Lowry on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at 1 p.m. Andy will be laid to rest with full military honors provided by the Lowry American Legion. Casket bearers will be Peder Engebretson, Dan Richardson, Mark Richardson, Al Hoff Jr., Gordon Hanson, Paul Engbretson, Wayne Thompson and Mark VanderMeiden. Honorary Casket bearer will be TJ Davis.
