Harold M. Heggestad, 78

Harold M. Heggestad, 78, of Bedford, Mass., passed away on Aug. 13, 2016, after a lengthy illness, surrounded by his family.

Born in Starbuck, he was the son of the late Martin and Marian (Steffen) Heggestad, residents of Lowry and Fergus Falls. He spent his early years in Cyrus and Lowry. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He graduated from Glenwood High School.

Harold was a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned bachelorís, masterís and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering.

He worked at Lincoln Laboratory as an electrical engineer from 1962 until his retirement in 2007.

Harold was a member of the technical staff and later group leader at MIT/LL He spent much of his time working in the communication division, particularly with satellite communications, laser and light communications. He spent 18 months working at the Kwajalein Missile Range in the South Pacific, where he worked on the ALCOR Radarís digital timing unit, among other things.

While at MIT, Harold enlisted in the United States Navy and served from 1958 until 1964 and was honorable discharged with a rank of Ensign.

A Bedford resident for the past 46 years, Harold was an avid reader and enjoyed fi shing, hiking, mountain climbing, cross country skiing and woodworking. He was a lifetime member of the Woburn Sportsmenís Association, and was also a member of Tau Beta Pi, SigmaXI, AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics), IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and the New England Woodcarvers, Inc.

He loved traveling and took many interesting trips with his wife and later with his grandchildren.

Harold was preceded in death by his younger brother, Merlin Heggestad of Coon Rapids.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Barbara (Skuret); his three children, Martin and David Heggestad and Lauren Dillonand their families.

He is also survived by a sister, Lorraine (Gerald) Drews, and nephew, Jonathan (Julie) Drews, all of Fergus Falls, and Clayton (Kim) Drews of Elbow Lake, and their families; a sister-in-law, Karen Heggestad and her children Heidi Wells and Chad Heggestad and their families of Coon Rapids; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law and their families who live in Connecticut.

Haroldís funeral was held at the Bedford Funeral Home in Bedford, Mass. on Saturday, Aug 20, followed by a funeral mass at St. Michael Church Burial was in Shawsheen Cemetery in Bedford, Mass.
